Lederhosen – A Key-Piece of Bavaria’s History

The Lederhosen - is there anyone out there who doesn’t know the quaint traditional attire from Bavaria? But where does it come from? As a matter of fact, the origin of lederhosen dates back to more than 200 years ago. In the 17th century, the lederhosen’s progenitor, the French “Culotte“, was highly beloved amongst the Europeans. Peasants used the leg wear as a their work clothing because of the sturdy leather of domestic animals like goats and sheep. Deer hunting was a privilege to the royal families at that time, so that Lederhosen were manufactured from deer skin only decades later. In August 1883, five friends from Bavaria, founded the first trachten society, after the lederhosen had nearly completely vanished from the market during the 19th century. At first, the friends were mocked by citizens and the catholic church, but one major proponent was on their side: king Ludwig II. After the king and his father had showed up at festive occasions, dressed in splendid lederhosen and trachten jackets, the church defered to the trachten trend. From that event onwards, the lederhosen’s popularity in Germany and Austria rose unstoppably. Until this current day, the lederhosen is one of the most worn garments in the German-speaking area: you’ll definitely see a whole bunch of people strolling around in Lederhosen when travelling through Bavaria and the bordering alpine regions!

Lederhosen: history-charged yet modern

Lederhosen are deeply steeped in history – every region has their very own features to the leg wear. In Switzerland for example, knee-length lederhosen are worn in a vibrant yellow. Tastes definitely differ! Us Bavarians, we mostly wear the so called “Miesbacher Tracht“. The typical Bavarian Lederhosen is kept in rather sober and darker colors. Yet, Lederhosen are still offered in tons of different brownish shades: classic variations are available in light and dark brown, beige, walnut and hazelnut; the more modern ones are also offered in different nuances of grey and black. The bib of the Lederhosen is usually decorated with colored embroideries, which contrast strongly to the dark underground. Embroideries can be also found on the lederhosen’s pockets and suspenders, which creates a unique charm. Alongside the big pockets on the frontside and the back pocket, there is also a small hidden pocket, which was originally made for a trachten knife. You see: the trachten lederhosen is full of surprises and nostalgic details you can learn about with every new one you let enter into your wardrobe! That’s the reason why nowadays, the younger generation willingly wears the historical trachten fashion, too: prom, a family party in summer and other festive events are the perfect occasion to get trendy with your lederhosen.
